Packaging is a series of Powerpoints that form a Unit of Work that supports the teaching of Design, in particular Packaging. Packaging is aimed at developing the skills needed to understand the process of Packaging and how to design a suitable product that fits the needs of the consumer. The aim is for the pupils to study the process of packaging, use 3D shapes from nets, develop their own ideas and design a cereal packet. Diamante poems are fun and easy to write. Their distinctive structure provides an ideal venue for sentence-level work on nouns, verbs and adjectives. The purpose of the poem is to go from one subject at the top of a diamond shape to another totally different, and sometimes opposite, subject at the bottom. The starting point for this activity is a slide show highlighting the key features of diamante poetry. The writing process is modelled and pupils are asked to identify and classify different parts of speech.

This unit revises the English GCSE novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. It includes interactive activities revising characterisation, important quotations, themes and key events, in preparation for the GCSE literature exam questions. Pupils will become familiar with American terminology to increase understanding of the novel and analyse the ending and its affect on the reader. The unit also includes teachers’ notes with suggestions on how to use each resource.

A resource based on identity and belonging and how clothes can be used to establish that identity. These activities are developed primarily as a speaking and listening resource but there are many opportunities for reading and writing also. All of the activities are based on the models outlined in the new Welsh Assembly Document ‘Developing Thinking’ with lots of opportunity for group work and fit with the new skills framework.

This lesson explores the features of written instructions including the use of time words to help indicate an order and the use of action words. Pupils have the chance to follow instructions and develop their own. The lesson could be used during a unit of work on writing, especially one that explores writing for purpose. Use of the whiteboard tools (eg pen, highlighter) would also enable the teacher to address other associated word-level work.

This lesson uses the story of Branwen, daughter of Llyr, one of the four branches of the Mabinogi, as a basis for teaching comprehension, speech marks and adjectives. It begins with a simplified presentation of the story. The main activity presents drawings of Branwen and Bendigeidfran. Pupils assign adjectives to each character by gender. The plenary requires the correct positioning of speech marks into an extract of the story. There are five supporting worksheets at text and sentence level.

Dafydd Drops a Goal is a poem about rugby. It tells of a young boy dropped to the substitutes' bench during an important cup match. He comes on to play during the dying minutes of the game and saves it with a drop goal. The unit was specifically written to provide pupils, particularly boys, with some challenging material that would perhaps change their attitude towards poetry. Ideal for years 5 and 6.
